What do vampires, villains, superheroes and celebrities have in common? They all rely on make-up artists to make their impression. Industry leaders working in the film, fashion, TV and theater industries will share make-up secrets and behind-the-scenes stories at the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show, which is returning to Vancouver, British Columbia July 23-24, 2011.
IMATS showcases the latest and greatest cosmetics and features demos and classes by Oscar-, Gemini- and Emmy Award-winning make-up artists. IMATS will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre and is open to professionals and the public. Royal & Langnickel Brush Mfg. is sponsoring the show.
Top attractions at this year’s show include a keynote presentation by film artist Rosalina Da Silva, whose credits include Tron: Legacy, Sucker Punch, Watchmen and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. District 9 artists Joe Dunckley, Mike Fields and Sarah Rubano will also speak, along with make-up effects veteran Steve Johnson, best known for his work on Ghostbusters, The Abyss and Spider-Man 2.
Fans of True Blood and Fringe won’t want to miss the keynote panel discussion with MASTERSFX, the team that created the shows’ looks and special make-up effects.
Celebrity artist Sonia Leal-Serafim—whose clients include Fergie, Florence and the Machine and Ellen Page—will wow beauty aficionados with a hair and make-up demo. Additional beauty courses will cover runway and specialty eye make-up and complexion perfection.
Cosmetics vendors will be showing and selling top products and tools at the show, working professionals will offer classes and make-up demos and make-up effects artists will show off their work in the Make-up Museum.
One of IMATS’ most exciting events, the student make-up competition, is divided into two categories. The 2011 beauty category has a tribal beauty theme, while the prosthetic category has a mythological creatures theme. Students will race against the clock to create winning looks and take home cash and prizes.
IMATS is produced by Key Publishing Group, which also produces Make-Up Artist magazine, a trade publication for professional make-up artists and make-up enthusiasts. In addition to the Vancouver show, IMATS is held annually in London, New York, Los Angeles, Sydney and Toronto. Make-Up Artist is read in nearly 70 countries and was created in 1996 by Emmy Award-winning make-up artist Michael Key.
The Vancouver Convention Centre East Exhibit Hall C is located at 1055 Canada Place, under the white sails, in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. Show hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. For ticket and schedule information, go to www.imats.net.
