The International Make-Up Artist Trade Show, which Los Angeles Times writer Alene Dawson has called “a celebration of make-up in all its art forms,” returns to the Toronto Congress Centre Nov. 12-13. IMATS, held six times annually worldwide, shares Hollywood movie magic, make-up trends and top products with pros and fans.
IMATS regularly hosts award-winning artists, and IMATS Toronto is no exception: industry leaders from film, fashion, TV and theater will offer classes, talks and live demonstrations. Keynote speakers will include Oscar winner Howard Berger (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe). Berger, who is now working on the forthcoming film Oz: The Great and Powerful, will be bringing his high-profile colleagues from the film with him to the show. Oscar nominee Adrien Morot (Barney’s Version) will also speak; his appearance will coincide with the release of his latest film, Immortals. Editorial artist Roshar (CoverGirl, Paul Mitchell, Vogue Russia) will demonstrate his signature techniques from fashion spreads and runway work.
Major cosmetics lines, including Nars, M.A.C., Make Up For Ever, Embryolisse and Royal & Langnickel Brush Mfg. will show and sell the latest and greatest products and tools and offer make-up classes at the show.
IMATS also features a live student make-up competition divided into two themes: Tribal (beauty/fantasy) and Mythological Creatures (character/prosthetic). Students will race against the clock to create winning looks and take home cash and prizes.
IMATS Toronto is produced by Key Publishing Group, which also produces Make-Up Artist magazine. In addition to the Toronto show, IMATS is held annually in London; New York City; Los Angeles; Vancouver, B.C. and Sydney. Make-Up Artist magazine is read in more than 70 countries and was created in 1996 by Emmy Award-winning make-up artist Michael Key.
The 2011 Toronto show is sponsored by Royal & Langnickel Brush Mfg. The Afterglow, a post-show party, begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at Canyon Creek, located near the Congress Centre at 25 Carlson Court.
