Fantastical movie make-up effects, eye-popping body paintings and runway-ready fashion looks are just some of the many attractions at the 2014 International Make-Up Artist Trade Show, which celebrates its 17th year Jan. 17-19 at the Pasadena Convention Center.
Oscar-winning artist Bill Corso (The Amazing Spider-Man, John Carter, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Emmy-winning artist Kevin James Bennett (Elle, InStyle, Another World, As the World Turns) have been confirmed as keynote speakers.
Featured speakers include Emmy-winning artists and cosmetics company founders Eve Pearl, Melanie Mills and Thomas Surprenant; beauty artist Roshar (Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar), sculptor and concept artist Jordu Schell (Aliens vs. Predator–Requiem, Men in Black) and London Brush Company founder/Halle Berry personal Siân Richards.
Face Off contestants will describe what it’s like to battle on camera during a panel discussion moderated by two-time competitor and featured speaker Frank Ippolito. Dexter make-up department head Keith Hall will discuss that show’s gruesome effects in an onstage interview.
The stars of the Syfy body-painting reality series Naked Vegas will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the show in a third panel discussion; a fourth panel, with the leaders of Spectral Motion (the make-up effects shop behind X-Men: The Last Stand and Hellboy II: The Golden Army) will cover movie make-up design.
The exhibit floor will be packed with companies offering more than 120 brands, from A (Alcone) to Z (Züca, Inc.). First-time exhibitors and returning favorites (Make Up For Ever, M.A.C. Pro, Inglot, NYX Cosmetics and Kryolan among them) will unveil new products and tools and offer discounts at the show.
The Moving Image Stage is among the new IMATS attractions—there, industry leaders will do extended live demos spotlighting make-up techniques for film and television. That stage will be located in Exhibit Hall Two, which will also house film and TV creations in the Make-up Museum and the two-day Battle of the Brushes student make-up competition. This year’s new beauty-category theme is Art Through the Ages; the character-category theme is The World of Comic Books and Graphic Novels.
IMATS will open Friday, Jan. 17 with master classes taught by Bennett, body painter Trina Merry, brow expert Kelley Baker and YouTube guru Kandee Johnson. (Master classes are not included in the weekend ticket price.) The Make-Up Artist Pro-Card Event follows from 4 to 7 p.m. General-admission hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19.
