A new date, a big bash and major artistic talent make this year’s International Make-Up Artist Trade Show Los Angeles a can’t-miss weekend!

The 2013 IMATS L.A. will be held in January (previous shows had been held in June). And it will coincide with the 100th issue of Make-Up Artist magazine, which produces IMATS. Weekend events will include a new documentary screening, the unveiling of a new creation by artist Kazuhiro Tsuji and an anniversary party.

IMATS keynoters include Oscar-winning make-up effects artists Tami Lane (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and Howard Berger (Hitchcock, Oz: The Great and Powerful).

Beauty keynoter Joanna Schlip is a fashion-industry veteran whose work spans runway to red carpet to major brand campaigns. Christina Applegate, Eva Longoria and Laura Linney are among her celebrity clients; she has done print for H&M and Victoria’s Secret and commercials for CoverGirl and L’Oréal. Her work has appeared in Vogue and on the runways for Chanel and Versace.

Face Off contestants will share their experiences on the show; additional panel discussions include top L.A. agents talking about professional representation and movie make-up artists discussing RED film technologies. Stila Cosmetics, meanwhile, stages its popular runway make-up show. And as always, make-up companies will unveil new products and tools and offer discounts at the show.

A make-up effects room is returning to Exhibit Hall Two. There you’ll find industry leaders doing live demos, plus movie and TV creations in the Make-up Museum. That hall will also be home to the Battle of the Brushes student make-up competition, where international make-up students race to create winning looks. This year’s new beauty-category theme is The Elements; the character-category theme is Oz.

IMATS will open with the Make-Up Artist Pro-Card day, held 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, followed by a special Pro-Card event that night. A short documentary on Tsuji, created by Juliet Landau and Deverill Weekes, will debut at the evening event, along with the unveiling of a new Tsuji creation made specifically for IMATS.

Public hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20. The anniversary party will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 and is open to IMATS attendees; Make-Up Artist Pro Card holders and VIP guests will receive priority entry.
